As I understand it, you won't get penalised for having duplicate content unless it's obviously been scraped from other sites and added to yours without any additional value being added to it.
You'll only get punished if it's designed to manipulate search engine results, but Google are pretty good at recognising this kind of duplication. After all, you can't help but see a lot of duplication online as a result of natural processes.

It may be what we humans consider duplicate content, but Goole does not necessarily view multiple occurances of a single article as duplicate content.
