Slow internet connection via switch

I am setting up a small internet cafe.

I have a 22mb line, which is connected to a dsl modem/router (netgear DG834GT 4 port). I also have a 24 port netgear switch (un-managed JSF524) which is connected to the router using 1 ethernet port.

My intension is to use the 24 port switch as a gateway for the 14 clients pc which will require internet access. The problem I have is that when I connect a pc to the switch using a diffrent port of coarse, I am able to connect to the internet, but my connection speed is low, like 56k.

Please help me

I would recommend getting gigabit switches. The ones you have now are only 10/100, where the gigabit is 10/100/1000.

Well think of it like this. You have a small doorway where you are trying to get 14 people through at one time. They are not going to be able to all fit through at once and it takes a longer time for each person to get to where they need to be. Whereas you build a bigger frame and door, more people can freely move in and out as they please. Stupid analogy I know, but even though you have a fast connection, you have to have the equipment that will support it.

During testing, I am only using one pc, and the speed is below 56k, so by your analogy, that is one person trying to fit through a 100mb door. is there any other reason why my connection is slower, I have checked the router and the connection spped on that is fine

Is your computer configured correctly? And I know this sounds stupid, but you don't have a phone line hooked up and are connecting through dial-up are you?

What kind of computer/s are you using?

No, I am connecting through adsl (22MB) using a laptop (p4) and a connection from the laptop directly to the router works fine. it is only when I use the switch as a gateway that the speed reduces.

Ok, I think I figured it out. Doesn't have to do with the switch at all. (well maybe a little). But I am guessing that you have it setup on a residential broadband or dsl connection. When you hook it to the switch it sucks all the life out of it, because it is small bandwidth. Even with a fast connection when you split into more than one it will cut the bandwidth in half for every added connection. ISP's do this so that you can't take one connection and share it with 24 users. You will more than likely have to pony up the cash and get a T1 connection. A normal residential broadband or DSL connection just wont work for you. Call your provider and see what they say.

You are correct, I am using a home broadband subscription service.
