SEO or SMM is all the good way to drive traffic ,you could do both if you can , if you want to drive traffic more quickly , paid per click is the best way ,but it have to run more capital .

if your product is strong then you should move with SEO, if your product about services or else something about consultancy then you should move with SMM

I will prefer SEO as it helps to give organic traffic which is one of the quality traffic source on internet, so if you wan to promote your website on internet then you can prefer SEO which will help you to give quality leads and business for your company, SEO is long term process which should be done in proper way and you should give more importance to quality than any other thing in SEO.

Yes you are right it all depends on marketing campaign. But after all Google updates like penguin and panda SEO peoples have to change there tactics too now you can not rely on same old method from getting link from just few sources. Links from different sources now counts to get you well ranked .
