If you want to promote your website, you need to work on your search engine listings.

If you have the budget, you might want to consider advertising on other sites either by directly contacting them and asking if they accept advertising (and finding out their rates), or through a broker like an affiliate network. Affiliate networks are like a middle man that lets you advertise on other websites without having to manually hunt for relevant sites yourself. You typically sign up with them and pay whatever rates they require, and they'll handle the payouts to the websites publishing your advertisements.

If you write your own original articles, you can actually make those articles available to other websites and newsletters for republication. The usual policy is that other sites and newsletters can republish the article only in its entirety without modification, and the author's byline and links to his website (usually at the bottom of the article) must be preserved.

If you are adept at writing your own software, you might consider offering free versions on your site to attract visitors. Offering your own original software allows you to leverage on the free advertising done by the numerous software sites on the Internet which drive traffic to your site.

There are different ways to promote the web site. To promote the web site, we use different techniques. These are called off page and on page. Major source of promotion is off page. This is also called link building.

    Hi Sarah,

First I'd like to congratulate you on the launch of your website. You have got some serious questions, which to a greater extent have already been dealt with. I would like to further summarize all of your options:

Social networking is the name of the game. Not only does it save a lot of your advertising and marketing budget, but with its amazing links and networks addresses a larger and versatile market. A fan page on Facebook with catchy features that monitor traffic, customer interests, future advancement in your services along with some case studies would take your website places.

Twitter, SlideShare, YouTube, Scribd etc can also play vital role in your promotional campaign. Microblogs, ppts, vblogs with company profiling not only attracts the customer attention but creates awareness and loyalty. Once you have a staunch user base, they will do your marketing campaign themselves by word of mouth.

SE's give no weight whatsoever to links from directories. As a matter of the fact, directory links can sabotage your site ranking. Better to not to use 'em.

Surely there are exceptions. Like DMOZ to name only one. I can see where very many so-called directories would be classified as link farms and thus "punished" by the SEs, but I don't agree that the SEs see all directories in the same light.

Do you have proof of this, or must we trust your crystal ball?

If you can prove it, I am going to submit my competitors' sites to 30,000+ directories!
