PR is a webmaster's folly, highly over rated and useless.

I don't agree that PR is useless, it's still part of the algorithm, so does have a purpose. After all, why would Google update and publish it at all if it has no relevance at all? Especially considering all that really does is encourage people to break their own webmaster guidelines.

I know people can outrank higher PR sites, but perhaps the ones they outrank are not really competing for that keyword anyway. I've yet to see a low PR site beat a high PR one for a a term they both competing for straight after an update.

However the Toolbar PR I would agree, it starts going out of date as soon as it's updated anyway.

Steve while I agree with you in theory, I cannot emphasize PR as a goal for Web Masters. I can however see its importance as a result of good SEO but not as a goal in and of itself.

Far too many people focus too much on their Pagerank to determine how their webpage ranks in Google. This isn’t how the system works simply because PR is only a product of good SEO. Just because you have a good PR it doesn’t mean your page will rank highly for a particular keyphrase. Do a search for any keyphrase and look at the PR of the pages, you will find the higher ranking websites don’t always have the highest PR.

A PR of 3 is pretty common these days and a site can achieve that rank just by being on line for a few months without any high ranking back links at all. I have done it. Moving from a PR of 3 to a 4 takes more effort and the higher the PR the greater the effort. That being said, to go higher than a PR of 4 or 5 can take years to achieve, if ever.

If your website is optimized properly your PR will increase as a result of good SEO.
