I advertised on Facebook. I am selling spy gadgets. It didn't result in any sales. Having said that, I notice I had some google searches for room debugging. Maybe that's the avenue I should be following!

The popular social networking site facebook is for more than just keeping in touch with friends and sharing photos. Companies that use the popular social-media site and its fan page module to market themselves to customers can increase sales. This will also allow you to drive traffic to your website, if your post is interesting, they will likely read the other posts you have on your website.

Social media works for the social media sites. It does not work for my businesses nor for any small businessman that I know in the REAL world. I can get hundreds of people that claim on forums that it works for their business but these are people whose claims cannot be verified. The best I have had from the internet is spurious calls. You can check web stats for hits and analyse those hits until you're blue in the face. The fact is web hits do not equal sales. Stats about hits versus sales don't hold true either. Personal experience.

Facebook marketing isn't about website marketing. It's a product marketing and not getting you visitors your website. You just build your product fan base there and it could increase exponentially (each new fan can bring their network).
Also facebook allows you to define very targeted marketing campaign to your product page there.
The best facebook marketeers are something 12-15 years old having over 10,000 friends sending "likes" to their friendlist.

I personally don't correspond with this strategy due to its less effectiveness as well as "not suitable" because social media forums should be clear & pure from commercial purposes.

I have a pretty unique set of websites and a pretty unique set of products. Online advertising might just possibly work for some people. Never ever has for me and I doubt it ever will. All I get from the internet is complete aggravation.

    Try this: www.spydept.com
    and www.sagephotoworld.com

Both are pretty unique - one offers debugging services. There's bugger all people I see advertising debugging yet in these times it's absolutely essential - I wouldn't live anywhere without debugging the place first.

The second is pretty unique also. Where else would you get somebody capable of taking the kind of photos I do? Sure - you'll find hundreds online but locally?

I tried Facebook and Twitter. Twitter was an utter waste of time - full of spam and nobody followed any of my postings. Facebook - as long as I paid, I got hits - no calls and no sales. I can press refresh on a browser to get hits from my own computer. Don't need hits - no interest whatsoever in hits. I need sales.

From personal experience of sales, it's all about face-to-face contact, getting the product in the prospective customer's hands and getting them to fall in love with it.

Social media is about interaction. When you interact, you create relationships; when you create these relationships, you create opportunities to share your products and services. This doesn't happen overnight. It takes time, consistency, and a genuine interest in the creation and nurturing of those relationships. If you aren't willing to do that, then hire a consultant that will do it for you; and if you aren't willing to do that, then don't do it at all.

There is not a standard list of rights and wrongs when it comes to social media, but there is one thing that is constant: no matter what industry you are in, do it badly and you will destroy your reputation within the social media realm. You can save your reputation by minding your manners.

    Cheers!
