The Directory submission is helpful. But you require submitting your site in excellence directories than it assists you to more backlink for your site. Right now i have lots of backlinks from some fine quality directory it also help to boost your site PR.

Directory submission is very useful but it has to be done in concert with other activities. Directory submission alone will not get you very far. You need to have a strategy to market your site via various channels.

Directory is effective if the link stay for long. and free directories accept the links ofcourse within 2 3 days if you check by yourself in the directory search bar.

If some one ask you to add link its called reciprocal link you no need to add links as if its free directories try to search free directory through google. you will get huge list of directories. It is effective as it give us one way free link.

I dont think directory submission work anymore. It will worth if you can yahoo directory link or Dmoz directory link. But most other directories carries very little SEO value.

I think, everything depends from the content of your web site. If the content of your web site is not very common, and you have not very high competition on your field of expertise, then Search Engines from different directories will bring most visitors to your web site. If you have too many competitors, then it is better to create links from the related web sites of your field of expertise. I had the experience with 2 web sites, where one had 20% of visitors from Google, Yahoo, etc and 5% from the links created from the different web sites. Another one had 5% of visitors from Search Engines and 20% of visitors from other web sites related to the content of that web site. Of course, I mean free links.

Directory submission, ARTICLE submission and etc are just steps of SEO but practically they don't work according to what we want. We just have to do it because they will increase the chances of getting traffic thts all.

Is not it the sources of good backlinks? I think directory submission is not good source of traffic, as most use only SE to find some thing.

Directory submission is like the submission in yellow pages. To get the permanent links for the site, it is necessary to submit your site to directory sites with geographical target location and in the most relevant category. Directory submission is good for the site as we submit a site to DMOZ we get a permanent link and search engines gives that much more weightage.
