real-time online transaction with Credit card
does anyone have idea how about going doin it? i know that i will need to have a marchant account. can i do it with PHP? how do i setup php with openssl and apache? then do i need to buy a certificate from VeriSign?

If you went with an existing shopping cart provider they would handle the integration with a payment gateway and the security issues. This link gives a good overview of the interaction between the credit card provider, payment gateway and shopping cart:

Even though the page specifically mentions the ShopSite shopping cart the principles apply to other carts and eCommerce setups.

As a new business, your main concern should be keeping expenses low since it will take at least 1 year to be profitable.
With that said, I would compare the services of a merchant account to paypal since in my experience, paypal is more cost effective, especially for businesses with a limited busget.
Good luck with your new site.

Best to consider your budget first before signing up for a merchant account as these could cost you from $50 to a couple of thousands.
If you're selling your products/services worldwide {as in the WorldWideWeb} - I'd suggest 1 of 4 things.
1. Costly: Open your offshore account -- setup an IBC, and then get your Personal Manager to set you up a merchant account to handle everything.
2. Reasonable: Sign up with Paysystems.com or 2 Checkout.com and then plonk in the necessary urls/links to setup your online shop. Be aware that the Bush Administration have sent messages to these companies not to deal with certain 3rd World countries, and you may have problems getting payment from potential clients coming from these countries. Remember, these merchant accounts here charge you a minimum of $49 to setup, 5% +.45cents per transaction, which could equate to a lot if you're selling heavily.
3. Cheap: Sign up with E-Gold.com or one of the "apparently" secure way of doing business without having to invest in any hardware/software. They like #2 charge a certain percentage off the bullion. Another option is to have your clients BankWire/TT funds to your account, or if you prefer lesser charges, its best to try WesternUnion.com -- This way, money gets to you within a couple of hours as opposed to a bank week if clients TT to your account.

I have hosted my site on http://b2bparadise.com, our site uses only a fraction of the features they offer, it is a complete e-commerce solution that has a catalog management section (didn;t found this on most ecommerce solutions). I have built my store up and ready in just 2 hours with about 200 items. I didn't required any html, ftp, webdesigning or any other tech know how. Just entered my categories, items, prices and upload images through their interface. Shipping Charge calculation, Sales Tax Calculation, Image Resizing, Reports on Orders received, coupons etc. were the built in features with them
They are charging $24.99 per month alongwith the hosting. Definitely worth a try.

There are many approaches to getting this working. There are 1000's of solutions. Again you have to decide how much functionality you want your store to have, how much do you really want to know about how it all works. You could go with an already built solution, usually with higher interest rates and fees. Or you could get your own merchant account, host with a shopping card. Usually host will allow you to use their server wide certificate. Many offer open source shopping carts with web based management tools.

I host my website with Website Source, for $10/month I get 800MB of disk space, 20GB of traffic/month, Miva Merchant and Site Studio, a no frills editor which I don't use. For my merchant account, I went with PayQuake, which uses Authorize.net, no monthly fees but the discount rate and transaction fee are high. Since my budget for this venture was minimal, it is a way for me to get going for very little money. I can focus on advertising and purchasing products. When things get better I can switch to another plan with lower discount and transaction rates, but they will have monthly fees. I am very satisfied with everything so far, especially Website Source which has excellent customer support. Good luck!
