Link building help
Can someone help me with ideas on how to build links for free, or cheaply. I know about buying links, but it is not worth the risk of being penalized by google.
I have found a few sites that offer manual directory submission and article writing/submission. Are these legit? Will I get penalized for using these as well?
I am looking for free ways to get quality links. I have read all about blogs and articles, but I simply dont know if I have advice that is relevant to promoting my e-commerce site.
I would love to hear ideas and suggestions from those who have built their e-commerce site to have a good monthly profit and have nice SE rankings.
Thank you.

There are several quality link exchange sites out there. Here are a couple we have used with success: Link2Me and LinkPartners
You can also search the major SEs using your own keywords to find sites related to yours and simply ask them to exchange links with you. Relevancy between your site and theirs is the key. If you're concerned about Page Rank, you want to link to sites, and on pages, that have higher PR than yours.

Try to find a Content Only website in your industry and try to contact them. Tell them how they will be doing their readers a service by providing information and then providing a place to purchase as well. (you will get ignored and turned down a lot, but persistence is key).

Your marketing efforts will depend on how much competition you have. I had an ecommerce site that was a super niche. With a hand full of directory submissions, I was #2 in Google for my #1 search term. In most cases, I would suggest doing both article submissions and directory submissions. Only submit your site to niche directories or general directories that are authority sites.
With your article submissions, you can write your own articles and post them at places like ezine, Article Base, and Squidoo. To avoid duplicate articles, you can submit them manually and submit the same article more than once.
Another thing you can do is have a blog on your site.

Try blog commenting or Emailing out to other site with similar in a similar niche to your sites.
Social networking sites can help too,
Try looking at the SEOmoz website blog too for help on tips on DO's and Donts for SEO, Matt Cutts blog is good to, for help on staying on Googles good side.

You can try my link.

I can't say which is 'best', but I can say that none of it is any good. Links from directories like at at worthless - they don't get visitors so you don't get direct traffic from them, and search engines don't like link farms, so you don't get boosted up the search ranks with them...

Dear Tamsin,
1) Link farms and Web Directories are very different things (see e.g. Web Directories, Automated Submission Web Directories in wikipedia).
Web Directories are used by Search engines for navigation.
2) If a Web Directory is searchable and links there are organized in a right way (which needs certain expertise and understanding how search engines work), your site will definitely benefit from this a lot.

Real Link building is reciprocal links. but there are few sites to whom you can link without backlinks. as an example http://www.antya.com
you can search more by struggle hard

Try to exchange links with sites similar to yours.
In my opinion exchange is good, since you choose the sites you want to exchange with and you will just add some links to your site which have the same subject wit yours.

Hi,
You can spread your links on cost-effective reasons by submitting contents to article directories and social bookmarking websites but of course, you should be focused on those websites that will go under your specified niche so that you'll not be banned in the process. Also, by contributing to message boards, other blogs and also having exchange linking, you'll let the readers and even other website owners see that you are introducing a relevant content that may help them find more information and in return, will also help you gain more followers adding to your traffic. The more followers you get, the more it will be possible for your website to be SEO friendly.

Hi,
Building links for a website is always time consuming factor and there is no option to buy links as google penalizes your site if you do such things. The best way to get backlinks for your site is to do directory submissions and search terms such as add link, add url with keyword you are targeting, by trying like this you may get link forms related your field and you can submit you details.there are more techniques related to optimization.

There are also services like LinkPartners and Link2Me. I use, and am happy with, both. Both have free levels and, of course, paid levels with more features.
