Online Video Advertising: Trending Up
Video allows for an experience which has a higher recall rate and a much higher probability of generating user action.Which is why most of the websites today feature rich media like videos, and small and highly targeted video ads.As the Internet snaps to life with homemade movies, TV shows, and other forms of video, companies that offer online video are seeing the value of their businesses surge.How much their value is rising,however, is becoming a topic of increasingly hot debate especially for small and medium enterprises who have a shoestring budget.
What's your take on this?

For the most part, video is a branding piece. Video may be trending up, but it is far from required. Small businesses trying to use video become very susceptible to falling into the trap of "keeping up with the Joneses".

I believe that Video commercials are going to be absolutely necessary for small businesses. It's such a powerful visual tool to reach out to potential customers. It's not a question of "do you want a video?" it's "what are you doing without a video?"

Its more of a question of "what are you going to do with your video" than anything. If you intend to use it for branding purposes, it is not necessary. Your site's name, logo, and colors speak to that. If you intend to use it for products, it is only necessary for when products need further explanation than a block of short text can provide.
For example, you do not need a video to show how a garage door opener works. But, if this garage door opener sent a signal to the mailbox and automatically brought the mail to your front door, that would need a video for further explanation. (Perhaps I should go get a patent on that before someone steals this idea...)

If THIS happens, then video begins to look much more appealing to businesses of any size.
The biggest problem with video has always been the lack of performance tracking. This new program may finally be the solution we've been hoping for.

Video can be the most effective way to get your brand out there. However, there is almost no way to track it. You can track how many views you get per site, but in terms of embeded videos (where users take your video a place it on their own site) there is just now way to gauge it's effectiveness.

While it looks surely "impressive" to have an own advertising video on your website, I think that for most small businesses, this way of marketing is not an effective choice.
Consider that creating a video commercial isn't a one-day job or something you can learn (in a relatively short time), too many skills are needed. This is like software development - you can learn the programming language, but this says nothing about the work you produce ;-)
Usually commercials should be done by experienced professionals and this means that you have to spend a nice amount of money. Well, and if you prefer the DIY method, then probably the result is more than poor.
So the question is "Are you willing to spend much money for a video commercial or are there better ways of marketing ?"

Case in point ... with all online marketing I think you loose a certain about of control once it's 'out there'(into cyber space), so it has to be a well thought out plan as to what you put 'out there' and where you put it.
Overall though, online advertising in any form is a definite in today's world.
