Free/OpenSource computer and software audit
Hi All,
I manage the IT for a small business with ~20 PCs/laptops and a combination of Windows and Linux based servers. I'm currently looking for a free or open source tool to audit all of the computers on the network and maintain records of the hardware and software present on each system. Preferably this would be a web based tool, but I can deal if not.
I've been trying a beta version of a system called NetPoint, but unfortunately have not been able to get it off the ground at all (I try to go to the site for the first time and get nothing but SQL errors).
Any advice?

I don't know that the product audits hardware the way you want, but you may want to check out Elite Compliance's products. This is where I work. The tool is web-based and tracks software installed on the network by computer. If you are interested, give us a call and let us know you heard about us here and I can make sure the product is provided at no cost for a time.

This is quite a special line of software you are looking for, so I doubt that you will find something really useful at the open source market. But you may look at http://www.sourceforge.net
Also please don't forget that the software may be free, but you either need to spend much time for getting familiar with it of your own or hire someone that will install and maintain the software for you.
