Credit card processing.
Anyone have a ballpark figure on the cost of billing and cc processing companies? I mean paypal isn't going to take you very far......

Credit Card Billing
It depends on the demographics of your situation:
*Where are you located ?
*Whats your target market ?
*What are you selling ?
*What is your monthly volume ?
Can be anywhere between 2.5% - 10% + $1.00 t/fee + other charges.

Thanks. NYC is the location. The question was a generic one, so I can't answer the remaining questions you posed. Like any beginning e-biz I would expect the volume to be rather small at 1st. So am I to understand such companies take a % of monies billed/collected in addition to a term fee?

Yes,
If you are able to get a US merchant account, considering that you have a US bank acc, and are a citizen, and that your eCommerce business is not too high risk, you may get 2.5% + $0.25 transaction fee.
Try Merchant accounts 4 less.

Otherwise look at European merchant account 5.5 % + $1.00 t/fee.
Try World pay.

Merchant accounts
It's really not unlike traditional retail in concept. I believe you pay an initial small setup fee and a monthly fee to the merchant account provider (which includes a percentage/tranaction fee to the credit card company and processing payments to your back account). On the Web, companies like Authorize.net, CyberSource, WorldPay and others can offer a turnkey system. I think all have special packages tailored for small businesses.

Just wondered if it was worth building my own, or any portion of it myself.
-
Some further info, if a site has it's own DB with stored user info, how do the pay services interface with it? I assume the cc# has to be output to them in some form or other, what form is it?
-
There are various types of integration depending on the processor, and your needs.Basically there is a simple html post type, directed to their server, or a direct API which is written in,with scripting ..(asp.net, PHP)

So these cc billing companies are capable of handling the output cc# in any number of serverside languages? Splendid. Thanks again, you're very helpful!
-
Correct,
This also makes for compatibility on all shopping cart platforms.

Can anyone suggest any cheap and reliable credit card processing service. There are so many of them such as Paypal, 2checkout, Moneybookers, ikobo and so on. And it’s really difficult to choose something. Probably someone can share his experience of using any of the services I have listed. Thanks.

There are a lot of processors, yes, but there is also a lot of demographics in the eCommerce business.
Some processors do High Risk,
Some will do Intenational merchants,
Some will do Multicurrencies,
Some will do 3rd Party,,etc..etc..
I dont always agree merchants should look for the cheapest solution, they should look for the best all round solution for their eCommerce business, a solution that can capture a wider market for example,.. pay for that!

Thanks for your reply. Which company did you personally use? And can you suggest any service that’s worth paying for?

What I am trying to say really is, it depends on your application.
What are you selling ?
Where are you located ?
What market are you targeting ?
What is the ticket size ?
What are your projected volumes ?
Is it tangible or Digital eCommerce ?
This information about your business, will provide solutions that are available. You can email me this information if you are not willing to publish it here, and I will assist you.
