Where do i get a web site?

    Greetings,
I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post my question in, so please feel free to move this topic to more apropriate directory if necessary.
I'm just starting out, trying to collect as much information about online business as possible, i see a lot of different service offers and all of them sound good, but i'm not sure what would fit my needs best.
I'm hoping to open up a store, i don't know the exact product yet, but most probably i'll pick computer supplies and some miscellaneous add ons.
My question is: "Where do i get a web site ? What is the best deal, to buy it of eBay, of to order a custom code?"

If you're just starting out, you might want to start small with an eBay store, just to get your feet wet.

Well you can always register a domain name with a company like DirectI or GoDaddy. And then get a hosting company like TechEvolution.

Now get you a design, a shopping cart script, an SSL cert, and a merchant account and an electronic payment gateway (and maybe Paypal) - you should have a start.

Buying from eBay, you might run into some problems from time to time and building one from scratch, you have your own and you probably would know more about it. If there is one on eBay that interests you though, consider it and research it

If you are going to sell a limited number of items, I have a site builder you could try out until you get your feet on the ground. It's not the most modern but the catalog, shopping cart, etc. are adequate for a site with limited products. I can send you starter kit for the price of postage.

I was thinking about using "Drop-shipping" services at the start, however i'm still doing a lot of research on daily basis, so this is not my final choice.
I don't think i understand what you mean by "limited products", do you mean buying items in bulk, then re-selling them ? I would need a storage then, and i'm not sure that my finance side will be able to provide a variaty of products and handle marketing side at the same time.
I will read more about eBay, but it seems very hard to sell something there if you don't have any rating.
    Thanks for your advices.

When I say "limited products" I was refering to only a few items ... say 25 or fewer.

First of all, you need to do a little research. I mean, before investing big bucks. I guess, that's why you are here

Then, you need to decide, what is it you want to sell. Technology will be different, depending on it. For example, I sell digital items (snowcron.com): ebooks, software, and the same model works for images, subscriptions, music etc. They do not require physical delivery, so I wrote a little add-on to PayPal (free so far) at snowcron.com/digital_sell.htm

Now, if you want to sell car details, this model wouldn't work, because you need to physically ship this hardware to a customer. Different model, different software, different accounting...

Still, even in that case, you need to do certain things, that are common to all business models, like SEO (ecommerce.snowcron.com contains a tutorial) and some psychology/design things, to make sure people like your site (again, we have tutorials).

If you just want to try, eBay is fine, just keep in mind, that there are many eBay stores, so you will have some competition.

    Yeah, i'm still researching.
To be honest i almost fell in to the trap.
I wanted to open up a dating site first, started research which brought me on eBay (i did not see that comming), by checking out web sites for sale i found a store, it's description introduced me to "drop-shipping". Seached "drop-shipping" in google, got a lot of scam (didn't know it then though), almost bought a membership. The only thing that stoped me was, i couldn't understand why not everyone does it, if it's that easy.
This forum helped me open my eyes, and today i finaly undestood whats in it for them.
I figured that i will build a site myself. HTML is very easy. The only script that i will buy is a "cart", i did see some free carts online though, not sure if they are any good (please advise?). As far as buying a cart, my research show that everyone is happy with "CS-Cart".

I can't see how can you compete on eBay if you are just starting out. You don't have a rank, no feedback, nothing. I see more potential in opening up an independent store.

P.S. To be honest, i get more scared with every newly read page. Risk of wasted money is huge.
