I agree but think DMOZ is the one exception. Google still seems to lend a great deal of weight to certain aspects of the ODP/DMOZ. IMO that's because ODP/DMOZ is human-edited and very little spam gets through. Other directories seem to let just anyone and everyone list their sites without much regard for content or value to Internet users.

Go to www.directory.google.com and you are at ODP/DMOZ! Unfortunately ODP is very slow, because they won't take on more volunteer editors. Rumour has it that this is so the metas (senior editors) can maintain their bribes from people desperate to get into ODP.

lol I understand all about the accusations of bribery, etc., but I can tell you from firsthand experience that it is just that ... accusations. DMOZ takes editor abuse very seriously and any editor caught with his or her hand out is soon gone. Most, if not all, of these accusations come from people that do not understand what ODP/DMOZ's purpose has always been ... or simply refuse to accept it as fact.

As for not taking on any more editors? False. They bring on new editors on a daily basis. I welcome them regularly myself.

Google places such high value on ODP/DMOZ data precisely because ODP/DMOZ maintians the best directory with the least amount of SPAM and the highest percentage of returns for what Internet users are looking/searching for.

Ooop! I think I shall bite my tongue very hard! No offence intended. But I am sure you have charge of a different ODP/DMOZ section to the one that caused concern.

lol No need for concern and no offence taken.

If you don't mind saying, what section/category concerned you? How long ago?

I'm not saying that editors never step out of line. But I assure you, those that do are soon found out and dealt with. Never, I mean NEVER, pay any ODP/DMOZ editor for anything. Report any solicitaions by editors ... sooner than immediately.

    One more thought ...

Is there a particualr site you can't get listed? If so, I'd be happy to take a look at it and give you my assessment as to any problems and your chances of getting it listed . I cannot and will not make any promises as to an actual listing but editors are free to "find" and list sites as they please. Of course, if your site is outside my categories, I can't list it anyway. But I can suggest it to an editor that can ... if it meets the criteria.

It's over ten years since I was a DMOZ editor. I enjoyed it, although DMOZ was shambolic in some ways. Unfortunately my wife fell ill and I had to cope with everything, so all hobbies were dropped. The editor re-instatement form did not work a couple of months ago, and the forum requests for re-instatement are effectively ignored. Perhaps I should be applying as an editor in your categories!

PS In sheer frustration at not being able to contribute again to ODP, I joined JoeAnt and constructed my little anthill!
