Need email archiving plan
Hi...
I'm new to the forum. I work on my own, and I'm looking for an inexpensive way to archive my email in the (unlikely -- I hope) event I have to produce it in a legal proceeding.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi,
The way I archive e-mail is by using IMAP by default, so that it's always stored on the server. At the beginning of each year, I archive all of the folders with messages from the prior year by just moving those messages onto my Local Folders in Mozilla. I use a free Windows program called Comparator (or you can use the Windows Briefcase) to synchronize the Local Folders on my laptop with my desktop, so that if either computer dies, there's always another copy. I've managed to back up about 10 years worth of e-mail (1.2GB) this way.

If you are using Outlook 2002, 2003, 2007 - it will archive your emails for you. I just specify the year and folders and let it do everything for me. I have been saving / archiving the emails since 2000

And to keep your email archives safe in case of you losing your laptop or whatever, you can either save them up to a network or onto an external hard drive. I have a 120gb Lacie drive which I use regularly for peace of mind. I have a new laptop with Vista on it, which has an automated backup included, so I just use that.

I wonder ...for those of you using the archive feature in Outlook -- how long would it take to find an individual email thread if you were suddenly required to produce one? Just curious -- has anyone had to find a particular email in a hurry?

A lot of backup software can backup your emails; some require that you close your email software while it is backing up, some can even backup your emails while you have your Outlook or Outlook Express still running.
