    Hello Jane

I myself was facing the same problem. I have tried trafficsmartz software. The application makes the web pages content rich and make them search engine friendly and also it will give you a lot of other facilities like evaluate your pages with respect to your competitors. Try it. Here is the link: http://trafficsmartz.net

    Online Website Traffic

Thanks, Lauren, for the referral to that last column on website traffic.

Jane, don't feel defeated. I would like to suggest you conduct a thorough study of your competitors' websites. Begin by searching Yahoo and Google with the 3 or 4 most popular keyword, or keyword phrase, that results in your competitors reaching high in the rankings.

Secondly, now that you have found the biggest competitors, begin to view the the html source code for each of those sites. Pay very close attention to the keywords, page descriptions and page titles they use. Draw up a list of the words and phrases that occur most often for all of these websites. Do the same for page descriptions and page titles.

Third, examine the content and layout on the pages of those successful competitors. Compare what they do to what you have.

Ultimiately, what you are trying to do is emulate the successful sites and avoid the mistakes of the lesser competitors. There is nothing wrong in that.

Of course, an alternative would be to purchase software that does a lot of this for you. I used two different brands of these applications. Only, I decided not to purchase upgrades and renewals after learning the secrets myself. These software applications are very good, and can produce results, but some of the work related to website page content, keywords and page descriptions remain yours to do.

Don't be frustrated. Just go through the steps above, one by one, until you have a total picture. It took me a day to compile all the information about my competitors who ranked in the top 50.

Oh, and don't forget your page title, page description and keywords in html for any page must be included in the text content of that page. Otherwise, you are wasting your time.

    Online Traffic Budget

Thank you, eSolutions, for the kind comment. Let's face it. Small businesses have limited budgets. As regards working to increase online traffic, there are many things you can do on your own. However, I have to admit that reaching the higher rankings in the top 50 listings there will require having to invest some money. For example, I had done all my detailed homework on keywords, page titles, page descriptions layout, etc. And that did result in high rankings with Google. Only that is not the only search engine in town. I finally broke down and put $299 into Yahoo's Express Listing service. That really helped me to break through with Yahoo, MSN and other search engines that rely on Yahoo results for their own listings. My Google rankings were also impacted (positively) because of this investment. I also put $25 (I think) into Ask.com (Jeeves, etc.) and that was an added boost.

In short, do the homework I suggested. That is essential to learning how to play the game and putting a good website on the playing field. However, you will eventually have to put down some dough to really break through to the top listings.

    Hi Jane:
In addition to registering with the leading search engines and optimizing your pages organically, you can also buy keywords on the leading search engines.

Web site hosting providers Interland and Affinity both recently announced services to help SMBs with search engine marketing. Here are some stories on those services. I'm not suggesting that you sign up with either, but the articles may give you some ideas on planning a search engine strategy.
