What would established small and mid size online retailers prefer: All-In-One SaaS ecommerce suite or loosely integrated shopping cart, order management system and shipping software from multiple vendors?

The choice between "ecommerce suite" versus "best-of-breed" ecommerce software is as old as enterprise software. You have to consider both sides of the equation.

On one hand we have a bunch of independent shopping carts, order management systems and shipping software vendors, building their own individual software products and attempting to glue them together via a web of proprietary APIs. These providers would claim that in this day of so many differing, and specific needs, no all-in-one ecommerce suite approach can truly meet the needs of a multi-channel retailer and an approach that lets them cherry pick apps left, right and center will always dominate.

On the other hand we have the players like RedPrairie, GoECart and NetSuite, who believe that the time, cost and complexity of integrating and maintaining disparate point applications, no matter how broad their APIs are, will result in organizations deciding that an ecommerce suite approach, which integrates a variety of applications using single data source like GoECart 360, will be the best approach.

Do you or anyone here has any data that compares the ROI of Ecommerce Suite v/s Ecommerce Point Solutions?

How about any data on Cloud/SaaS v/s on-premise Licensed software?

From my experience, my client was frustrated with their ecommerce systems because everything was in silos, and it was difficult to communicate. They had internal staff managing the ecommerce and back-office envionments, but they didn’t understand all the different applications (shopping cart, site search, reviews, recommendation/personalization engine, Order Management System OMS, Shipping Software, etc.), and upgrades were really painful (and expensive). Then they implemented a SaaS Suite, attracted by the cloud delivery model, and built-in integration capabilities. This provided them with the latest version, all the time, without downtime. Having one system like NetSuite, GoECart or RedPrairie etc. and a unified dashboard can also help improve service levels and increase customer satisfaction besides allowing you to grow your core business without getting bogged down by IT, as it did for my client. GoECart and NetSuite are far more affordable than RedPrairie which is a roll up of many acquisitions.

I would say if you are big enough and can afford the all-in-one solutions then it will probably save you a lot of headache but in general these solutions do not come cheap at all. Most clients prefer a single solution which can manage everything over having to login to different places. And having a single company for support is always a plus. Be careful though that you can afford it and have the volume to justify the expense. Goecart is $1000 per month which is about 10x more then a regular hosted ecommerce solution.

All about cost and complexity of the project. SaaS works but you looked to changes and flexibility.

More and more stuff is happening in the cloud. In fact, I would argue that for SMBs, there is greater flexibility in the cloud/SaaS environment than on-premise applications.
