This is a pretty easy thing to GOOGLE

    What is an SSL Certificate?
SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization’s details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. Typically, SSL is used to secure credit card transactions, data transfer and logins, and more recently is becoming the norm when securing browsing of social media sites.

While seeing a lot of regular common connection based hacks these days, it is always good idea to protect your service with SSL encryption. Also web encryption helps to fight middleman attack. Since it is free and there are little impact on hardware (almost no impact on modern hardware as there is dedicated unit for all the encryption job) everyone must use it.

An SSL Certificate (Secure Sockets Layer), also called a Digital Certificate, creates a secure link between a website and a visitor's browser. If you sell products or services on your website and accept credit cards online, you need an SSL Certificate for website security.

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, as described in full form you can assume that this is all about the security layers, the main advantage of an SSL certificate is, this encrypts your website sensitive data and send to server using SSL technology. SSL protects your sensitive data like passwords, payment gateway data, etc. and another benefits is this is one of the factors of Google Ranking Algorithm.

HTTPS does not have any different convention. It works utilizing HTTP however uses scrambled TLS/SSL association. It Is exceptionally secure as the data is scrambled before it is seen over a system

SSL certificates are used to create an encrypted channel between the client and the server. Transmission of such data as credit card details, account login information, any other sensitive information has to be encrypted to prevent eavesdropping.
https offers an extra layer of security because it uses SSL to move data. For all intents and purposes, HTTPS is HTTP, it's just the secure version. To get technical on you, the main difference is that it uses TCP Port 443 by default, so HTTP and HTTPS are two separate communications.

Benefits of Securing Website With SSL Certificate. SSL stands for Secure Socket Layers and is a public key infrastructure that uses the RSA method of encryption and authentication via security certificates. It helps to establish a secure connection between the client and the server through the secure protocol HTTPS.

The Purpose of using SSL Certificates. SSL is the backbone of our secure Internet and it protects your sensitive information as it travels across the world's computer networks. SSL is essential for protecting your website, even if it doesn't handle sensitive information like credit cards.

SSL stands for "secure sockets layer" and is a form of security for sites that handle sensitive information such as visitor's personal information and credit card numbers. It creates a secure connection between a visitor's web browser and the server of the company they're interacting with.

https is identical to http because it follows the same basic protocols. The http or https client, such as a Web browser, establishes a connection to a server on a standard port. However, https offers an extra layer of security because it uses SSL to move data.
