To protect your data form any type of loss, you have to pay attention to a few things-
    1. Always keep an anti-virus in your system.
    2. Do not open the link in any kind of email.
    3. Do not open the mail in an unknown device.
    4. Stop mail immediately when not in use.

I use HTTPS Everywhere, Privacy Badger and uBlock Origin plugins, NordVPN with CyberSec turned on, ProtonMail for mail, use Incognito mode very frequently. I think I'll keep my files in a cloud-based storage too. And of course 2 step authentification where possible. What do you use? I'm curious.
