Unicorn Term

Unicorn is a term for all company in any kind of industry. According to Wikipedia, a unicorn company is a privately held startup company valued at over $1 billion. The term was coined in 2013 by venture capitalist Aileen Lee, choosing the mythical animal to represent the statistical rarity of such successful ventures.

What Else?

There is a lot of unicorn company across the world. According to TechCrunch, there were 279 unicorns as of March 2018. And the big fives so far are Uber, Xiaomi, Airbnb, Palantir, and Pinterest. In my country, Indonesia, there are several companies that have unicorn title for their hard work. You can learn a lot from GOJEK, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, and Traveloka.

Higher Than Unicorn Company

There are also several companies that have more than 1 billion worth. For the term, people use decacorn to call a company that has value over $10 billion worth. And hectocorn term used for a company valued over $100 billion worth. According to Wikipedia, many unicorns were created through buyouts from large public companies. In a low-interest rate and slow-growth environment, many companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google focus on acquisitions instead of focusing on capital expenditures and development of internal investment projects. Some large companies would rather bolster their businesses through buying out established technology and business models rather than creating it themselves. So, they are basically a business monster that devours another stable company and manages it to become a part of themselves.

Special Features

In my country, there is a unicorn company that has a marketplace as their business model. And to make a difference, it makes a special feature that supports both customer and seller to bargain the price. It's quite simple. First, the seller will put the price tag on and if the customers want to buy it, they can just click the bargain button to start. They will bargain until they have a deal. But if the deal doesn't meet, then you can just leave find another seller. Just like exactly what you did on the conventional market.

And that special feature is just an option. You don't have to bargain the price if you don't want to. Simply send the product to the shopping cart, purchase, pay it, and enter the shipping description. So basically, it has two features, but the bargain features still quite intriguing and different than other marketplace websites.

Tokopedia also has a special feature for the customer. But this feature just applied for its mobile app. When you shake your handphone, you can enter a special chatroom that contains a lot of surprise and gifts. Well, this is part of their strategy to entice people to download and use the mobile app, instead of just buying from mobile web. Since mobile app tends to be more exclusive and less distraction. A customer also wants it fast and there is no need to check another marketplace website. So, I think it's quite effective for the sales growth and to make people use the platform. Perhaps for a loyalty as well.

Features Update
From the examples above, we can learn that special features give a powerful support for us to keep our pace in the competition. The special feature also gives special experience for the customer. These days, the customer's advocate is quite important for the future of our company. Reviews and sharing have become culture between us. And anyone can use it. But not everyone could use it creatively.

And yes, there are several things that you can try to become a unicorn company. Marketing and strategy management are two other keys that you can do by your own team, but for small business, becoming a unicorn company is impossible. Especially if you don't have any website developer on your team. How can you run features update or even upgrade if you don't have any web developer at your disposal?

About Company Buyouts
Company buyout is an easier and faster way to become a huge company. But I think developing yourself is also important and significant. Rather than buying a company, developing your own company to become more successful is last longer and quite challenging to be done. But it doesn't mean you can't buy a smaller company that has so many potentials on the go. You can do both. While developing your own company and features, you can also buy some small business that related to business model and increases your sales growth.
