Welcome Aaron. I'm Joe, one of the admins around these parts. I manage all the Jupitermedia forums, of which this is one. Nice to meet you
Welcome Aaron!
Hopefully you will find lots of good and expert advice here to help you along with your small business/e-commerce endeavors.
Vangie
Nice to meet you too Vangie. I know you've been here a while now, but not too many members seem to venture into the lounge. It was my dumb idea to add it :D
And nice to meet you as well! I've been a member here for a little bit, but Im more interested in the e-commerce topics than Small Biz so I don't really post too frequently.
Now, to be honest with you - Its not a dumb idea at all. For me though, seeing the "exec" title made me think for awhile it was a place for mods and users with high post counts to use as a general chat/question/introductions area.
Hopefully others notice this thread and take a moment to introduce themselves - especially some of the users who frequent the forum and offer such excellent advice on the topics posted here!
Vangie
Ah, maybe that's the problem! I just picked that name because everyone who comes here is pretty much a business owner, hence "executives". If there were a mod forum it would be invisible to the registered user. Actually I have been reading your contributions to the forum for a yr now and was thinking that when more moderation becomes necessary, you'd be one of the 1st I'd ask.

Welcome Joel! I'd imagine you'll find lots of good ideas and starting points once you scroll back and search through the forum! I hope you plan to 'spill the beans' so to speak and tell us about the business you and your partner are working on! I enjoy reading about different businesses and how people started them.

Turns out it was actually a program on networking. I started to go through the vigorous course. I started off and went through A+ but this wasnt your normal A+ course. We were drilled every chapter we dissasembled hard drives, routers, laptops and put them back together. The thing i loved about it was if you made a mistake and something didnt work nobody killed you the instructor sat down with us and we figured out what went wrong and fixed it. So our final exam for that was to completely disassemble a computer and install the OS with all of the drivers (which the instructor made sure every component that was on the machine didnt have drivers standard with windows so we had to search the internet and find them) We had 3 hours to complete this task. I took the A+ exams and received my certification. Next I took a course on Network + and this is where I met my partner. We had to setup a Server and workstation, and do many different exercises. I had was partnered up with somebody (not my partner) who had a tendency to screw things up, but this made me a great troubleshooter. For our final for that course our instructor made us design a network for the entire school building showing how we would do it if we were designing it. Which taught me alot.I took the test for Network + and nearly got a perfect score. I then started taking my Microsoft courses and went through similiar vigorous training learning how to setup domains, and much moore. I then took my 7 Microsoft tests to get MCSE which I passed everyone the first time with flying colors. I then moved on and took a CCNA course where I learned to troubleshoot and configure cisco routers. I have not taken the test yet, though. I also received credits for a degree in Network engineering which i am currently going to school for. As I was in this class I received a job with the geek squad. Who's stupidity, crookedness, and price gouging irked me. So i left and got a job at Lockheed Martin. I am still working there. At about this time we decided to start a business doing the same kind of stuff that we were trained to do troubleshoot, design, and setup networks, but we do much more than that such as user training, data recovery, and data backup. We have worked with many businesses already and they have said we are the best priced, most effecient, and have better customer service than anyone else in the area.Quote:

Excellent!
Wow , it sounds as if the place you received most of the training really had a grasp on introducing you to real world situations. That is definitely a great story. I think more and more today people are coming around to understanding that many of the younger techs really have it together and can do an amazing job - that you don't have to work with a huge firm or pay over a certain amount of money to get good, quality, outside technical support or services. And if you enjoy doing this, and have the skills and abilities, really, why not start on your own consulting. It makes sense to.
Good luck!
Vangie
Thank you for your kind words Vangie,
Well I would like business to get better. I have some steady customers that i do maintenace for, and i get alot of calls for estimates from other potential customers. Who turn me down alot of times because my age. I try to act as a lowly employee but they always want the final estimate from the owner or supervisor. They always have this look when i tell them your looking at him. And for some reason or another i dont get the job probably because of my age. I would like to do consulting also, but i would like to get settled first doing what i am doing.
You'll grow outta that ;) I know that's not much help now though.
I hope so. Thank you for the kind words, everyone.
