SE's seem to be looking at forums as well as directories fairly big in the past couple of months. The primarily gave links. The links do matter I wouldn't make a business model out of it.

Signature is Heart of Posting. Without it Post has no value. Signature is the main source of Advertisement.

As per my knowledge it is included in SEO link building task and through forum signatures one can able to build link.
Search engines look at directory and forum fairly. Mainly for paid links the relevant things really count and I would ready an industry model for it.

All the forums in the internet do not give you the permission to have a signature link. But you can submit a link with your signature if the forum locates you to post frequently.
