Directory submissions are no more important as per the major search engine point of view. The major search engine google has changed its ranking algorithm and kept back the directories. But still if we could submit the internal pages for good directories it could do some good for your site.

Directory compliance is constructive. But you need to put forward your site in quality directories than it helps you to more back link for your location. Accurate currently I have many back links from some good superiority directory it also help to augment your location PR.
Yes, directory submission is an efficient SEO technique and presenting links on free directory submission websites can become you quality backlinks which can growth the PageRank as well as traffic of your website.
Since SEO is not an exact science you would be needing various combination of different link building techniques and directory submission is one of them. Though it really takes time to be approved, it is still worthy in the end.
Submitting to high PR directories is a good option. However, bookmarking is much better than directory submission.

Directory submission is practical but you require sending your website in quality directories to assist you in having additional backlinks to your site. At present, I have several backlinks from a number of good quality directories as it assists in increasing the site’s PR.
Submitting your website in directories is always useful if they accept your website submission. In these days people are doing spamming into the directories by inserting bulk of keywords, Title and description. So before submitting your website into the directories we have to modify website Title keywords and description after that we have to look at the proper category where we can submit the website. This is my personal experience, i am getting great number of traffic from the many directories and i track all the websites which accept the links and help to generate traffic and for next project i only submit my website on these websites.
Yes it helps but it takes around 15 days before the site will approved your submission. I suggest that make the detail of your company concise and submit it on the right category to properly being listed on it.

Like a soon-to-be ex-list owner my view is a gigantic NO! Connections are simply efficient if they are from locations pertinent to your own.
