I'm surprised no one has mentioned AIM or Meebo. Both of them are free and can be placed on your website relatively easily. As you mentioned that you don't need bells and whistles, either AIM or Meebo is a great stepping stone into chat on your website.
If you have a smart phone, you can also install a Meebo app to get chats to your phone anytime you're logged on.

Our eCommerce clients here at Dydacomp have been using LivePerson for sometime. LivePerson Chat allows you to have members of your staff available to communicate with shoppers for product inquiries while they are on your site. This is helpful because if a shopper has to call to get additional information, sometimes they will leave that site to go to a site that does have the additional information.

Olark is a good bet
Have you tried Olark? It's a YCombinator startup with a lot of potential. They specialize in chat systems to keep you connected with your e-commerce site.
Also, babolog.com/launch has an integrated chat system on the way. (E-mail link removed)
