The latest word is that Google does not penalise duplicate content. It tries to index the best copy (judged by its surrounding context or whatever) and not index the other copies. If you want to submit 100 copies of your article to 100 directories in the hope of 100 backlinks, you have to edit them about until every one of the 100 appears unique to Google.

When there are huge blocks of content on many URLs, it is duplicate content. Pease don’t post duplicate content.
