I have used both PayPal and authorize.net. I have been happy with both. I think that if you are unhappy with PayPal, then don't use them. Authorize.net is a good service that has never caused me any problems in over 2 years.

What type of product are you selling? If it's a downloadable item like software or some sort of media there are a lot more options open to you than just paypal or a merchant account.
Third party processors can be a lot cheaper than a merchant account, and a LOT simpler to setup.
