can you explain Difference between SE index & Cached snapshot?

The cached snapshot is taken a a point in time that may or may not reflect the site as it is today. It may have been taken weeks ago.

I think, Index will go to the real time page and cache link will go to a "backup" page made by Google

I understand about SE index but what is cached snapshot here?
