If you are looking for Free shopping carts I have a list @ http://www.ecarttemplates.com/free_shopping_carts.php there are at this moment 52 carts listed.
We've used osCommerce in the past and it performed really well for our retail business... does need a bit of skill customising it or a 3rd party specialist.
I liked cs-cart, but its not free...
I found another cart webShaper...its really good abt simultameously expensive..$799
dunno why is so expensive
For a free cart oscommerce is great. it is the most often one used and has a large network of users and developers which means there are more modules to install and it is easier to get custom work performed or to find free guides.
I also think that Zen Cart or CRE Loaded are better options. they are based on the oscommerce cart, but they have have many features already installed.
