credit card processing question

Hi,
This is my first post although I have been a member of the site for years. My largest client, state government, has just required me to accept credit card payment. I only invoice them a couple of time a month and I’m going to experience major expenses just to handle these couple of invoices. The invoices I submit to them are large, mid-five figures.

I have two questions:
1. Is there a credit card processing company that will process payment for just a transaction fee? I’m going to be paying a lot for handling of two invoices a month.
2. If no one knows of such an entity, which company has the smallest fees?

Any help will be of great value to me.

I could not locate a credit card processing company that would “work with me” to the terms I thought were fair. I wasn’t looking for a free ride but to charge me anywhere from 3 – 5 percent on my transactions was (I though) ridiculous since I would only have 2 – 3 very large transactions per month.

The requirement was from a major client, one that I invoice monthly. My invoices are large, 40K – 75K and to pay that type of percentage on one invoice a month I thought completely unfair since I had no other reason to accept credit card payment.

So, I ended up negotiating with the client and we now happily have our banks transferring the payments into my account using EFT at no charge to me or my client. And, I still don’t have the capability to process credit cards.

Excellent! You obviously provide very good service to that company, or they would not have tried to find a way to work the matter through to mutual satisfaction. Wire transfers are also an option we offer our clients. Their bank fee, and ours, is fixed at a certain dollar amount, regardless of the amount of the transfer.

BTW you were right in not paying 3%. A good gateway setting up merchant accounts should never charge those high rates for anything other than higher risk - which you obviously aren't.
