    Manually Process Credit Card Details

    Hi there
We are currently using Shop Factory, but looking to switch to a different solution. The main requirement, is that we need to be able to take credit card details manually. We have a shop with our own credit card terminal, that we want to process the orders through.

    Any recommendations?
    Thanks in advance.

Check with your merchant provider. They often give access to a browser-based virtual terminal within your account so perform manual charges.

With Authorize.Net I have the option to either just capture or capture and process but since you have your own terminal you don't need a merchant solution, just a way to get the credit card information. I would imagine you could create a form on your site and have it present over a secure (ssl) page and have the information e-mailed to you. This would be less likely to succeed because of the buyer's reticence to input such sensitive information into a form. I would check with your processing company to see if they have an online solution for your cart to just capture the information securely. If not, perhaps they can give you a list of carts that support their gateway.

    Hi Concept,

Great question! I have to admit though that you are going in the round about way, when things are suppose to be automated, you're actually trying to do it manually. I think I can understand though, as I currently have a similar system for one of my stores.

If you are looking to change systems, I would recommend Magento Commerce as it allows you to capture credit card details and then you can process it manually without having to link to a payment provider. In my situation all I do is log into the back end and copy the credit card details into the terminal and process it. Make sure that your administration section is running over a SSL connection too, so you are protecting your customer's private information.

I hope this solution helps and if you are processing it manually it sounds like you are able to save some hefty merchant provider fees as well.

Let me know how you go?

While there are many carts that enable offline card processing, a FAR MORE IMPORTANT concern is PCI Compliance. (Just do a Google search to see what this means).

Taking cc data - even through SSL - does not mean it'll be okay with your Merchant Bank. Unless your setup passes PCI Compliance, you could be liable for the cost of any fraud as a result of taking cc data, as well as the cost of the bank investigating and recovering from that fraud... AND you could find yourself blacklisted, not able to get a merchant cc account!

At the very least, PCI compliance is usually given only to sites hosted on a dedicated (not shared) server, that is specifically configured and secured to meet PCI's exacting requirements.

So... the first question to ask your host, and website creator is: "We will be taking offline cc payments. How are you guys on the PCI front?"

If you get a puzzled look in response, take your business elsewhere.

    Cool Payment Gateway issue

This is not a cart issue but a gateway issue, as most online sellers get tons of phone orders from people who don't want to look around a site to find items or feel uncomfortable using their credit cards online.

Paypal Pro, Authorize.net, Paymentech, USApay, all are major players and most carts are integrated with these gateways and they all have online virtual terminals.

These are really useful for issuing credits, taking phone orders or -- if you are making a special multi-item deal or a custom order. All retail online sellers have a high percentage of phone orders if they offer it to their customers.

Now, without the virtual terminal - then you have to pretend to be the customer and go in the store and pretend to buy something and its a lot of hassle - in the virtual terminal you just input the cc info and an order number and you put it through.

It's also find for walk up purchases too. But it has nothing to do with the shopping cart, it's a gateway issue, the cart just has to be integrated with the gateway solution.
