I believe that Quickbooks has a POS suite that covers real-time inventory and, of course, interfaces with Quickbooks Pro. I think pricing starts at around $800.

Integrated software

You should have a look at Icode's Everest software, it integrates what you want to do into one package with one db and one user interface. I'll be happy to provide more info including a demo CD. Or, register for one via my website www.icodesolution.com.

This is an affordable, scalable, and really hot product. I urge you to take a look.

While the iCode solution is more robust, the quickBooks solution will be an easier implementation for a do-it-yourselfer. You can get the QuickBooks POS product either as a software-only product, or as a semi kit, which includes the software, bar-code scanner, cash drawer and post display. You provide the PC. If you are looking to grow, Microsoft Business Solutions offers both Small business Manager, which is much more capable than QuickBooks as an accounting solution, and Retail Management System, which ties into the Small Business Manager, and is able to grow from one register to dozens of stores in a chain. Write me back if you would like more details.
