We are (almost) at our wits end trying to get a legitamate list that
we can use....must be minimally single opt-in. Has anyone had any success? This is for B2B.

Have you considered partnering with affinity groups, sporting events, etc? Often their membership lists have many small business owners, and they have e-mail lists.

Legitimate e-mail list brokers will only rent out lists. If someone is offering to "sell" an e-mail list at a inexpensive price it usually is spam. Almost all list brokers have lists to rent -- depends on what type of list you are looking for -- industry, job function, geographic area etc.

One of the best places to look is SRDS Media Solutions (www.srds.com) The Association of Interactive Marketing (AIM) www.interactivehq.org/ provides a listing of reputable list brokers, too.

You might also want to consider creating your own email list.

Creating your own permission-based list is an excellent way of building an audience that truly wants to receive your message.
By inviting online visitors to join your email list, they can give you explicit permission to send them email. This is called an "opt-in" email list.

If you add another step—requiring that all new members confirm their subscription via email—then your list is "double opt-in." Double opt-in is an industry standard for ethical email communication and business practices.

Since you own the list, you control the content and the frequency of all messages. That is valuable whether you're sending out an e-zine, marketing a product, or creating an online discussion group.
