Can I do my own web programing/developing??
Hello all! I am trying to start up an ecommerce website and I have been speaking with the wholesaler and I was told the following:
"You will also need the assistance of a web programmer or web developer. (Note that these are different from web designers). The programmer/developer will need to write scripts to allow your site/database to programmatically download large text files via FTP and make automatic web services calls. You will need a database that can parse the fixed length data feed. You need to be able to store customer’s account information and purchase history and your system will have to be programmed to compare a customer’s address country to allowable territories in the catalog in order to prevent sales from unauthorized territories."
I was wondering if I would learn to do this myself and and where I can find out how. Or maybe just get some sort of mentor that can get me started. I have no programming experience and am starting the site from nothing. If this is difficult for a newbie to learn then how much would a service like this cost.
Thanks in advance for all advice and information

to write an entire e-commerce website yourself, starting with no experience whatsoever? If you work at it every day for 8 hours, it could take anywhere from 6 months to forever to learn all you would need to learn, depending upon how predisposed you are to that type of thing. Like anything else, it's a talent, natural aptitude makes a huge difference. Once you've gained the necessary knowledge developing the site should take a month or 2. These are approximations of course. Also depends on how big the site will be and what features you wish to incorporate

Why in heaven's name would you want to do that? There are so many good e-commerce solutions out there to choose from where all the work has been done for you. All you need is a hosting account with databases. Some accounts have Simple Scripts that will install the whole ball of wax for you in just a few seconds and all you do is add products, images, descriptions, a payment processor and away you go. I do it all the time.
CS-Cart is my cart of choice with a great support forum.

Whoa!! Simmer down man, I told you I am new. I have been looking into web hosting companies and originally thought that the hosting site would provide tools needed to do this. When I got this back from the wholesellar it threw me off a bit. I read it as though I would have to provide script for each item on the site. Seemed really a lot more complicated than I originally thought. Looks like I was over thinking it. Thanks.

Some of them do. There are turnkey solutions out there, you just have to look for them. I'm not able to give you any names myself, since I've never used any, but I do know they exist.

As for me I'd rather apply to on-line service if I had no experience. Really, there are so many already made stuff for ya, all that you need - add your content - that's it! And even if there appear any questions, such websites have a supporting team which would navigate you all the time. So, maybe it's better to save your time? Or if you seriously interested - apply to college where you can get knowledge in that sphere, 'cause to find out everything by yourself is really difficult.
In anyway - best of luck!
