A wide open question with an answer that would fill several books.

Oh, wait. It DOES fill several books ... and Web sites.

Just Google "guide book for internet marketing" ... without the quotes. You'll get more than you can read in a week. Just beware of scams.

Jennifer Schiff wrote a good article --- she spoke with three small businesses about how they've been using social networking to drive business. It's an informative read:

Social Network Marketing Meets Small Business

We take a look at how social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have changed the way businesses market themselves and connect with customers.

Internet marketing is quite helpful to increase website traffic. What ever may be your business interest, it needs genius marketing strategies to make it successful. The online business too needs the same strategy with much more concentration as internet is the host for your competitors too. You need to adopt compelling online marketing strategies to promote your business online.

It is the integration of web design, development, and internet marketing with focused traffic-generation tactics that is vital to the success of a site. Without smart marketing any great website will fail.

Internet marketing is associated with several business models:

* e-commerce — this is where goods are sold directly to consumers (B2C) or businesses (B2B)
* Publishing — this is the sale of advertising
* lead-based websites — this is an organization that generates value by acquiring sales leads from its website
* affiliate marketing — this is process in which a product or service developed by one person is sold by other active seller for a share of profits. The owner of the product normally provide some marketing material ( sales letter, affiliate link, tracking facility).
* local internet marketing - this is the process of a locally based company traditionally selling belly to belly and utilizing the Internet to find and nurture relationships, later to take those relationships offline.

There are many other business models based on the specific needs of each person or the business that launches an Internet marketing campaign.

It is a pretty wide topic. I think that the best method if one has time is Search Engine Optimization. This involves things such as writing blog posts that contain keywords relative to your site, getting links to your site (this is probably the most important), and structuring your site in a way that it can be accessed buy search engine spiders.

Marketing your websites or services over the internet should be done in a very systematic way. It should not be spammy and ways should be legitimate but the most important thing is that if your website has quality content then only a little amount would be enough and your website would surely be popular in no time.

Basically what you have to do is bring your product/service where people is.
Some years ago everybody was advertsing on TV only. Now, we have the Internet--->
Facebook, Twitter, Wadja.com etc. This is where the audience is.

Internet marketing also refers to the placement of media along different stages of the customer engagement cycle through search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), banner ads on specific websites, e-mail marketing, and Web 2.0 strategies. In 2008 The New York Times, working with comScore, published an initial estimate to quantify the user data collected by large Internet-based companies. Counting four types of interactions with company websites in addition to the hits from advertisements served from advertising networks, the authors found the potential for collecting data upward of 2,500 times on average per user per month.[1]
