Is link building really that important?

In today’s world, link building is very important. SEO works on the basis of a few methods and two of its most significant aspects are links and contents. Not having good quality links are really hard for a website. It won’t get a high page rank or it won’t attract good amount of traffic. Quite a few of the SEO techniques are focused to bring in quality links from high traffic websites that will help the website to get good traffic and can be noticed by a lot of famous search engines. To rank really high, effective link building can help. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it’s important for online business to have link buildings?

WRONG! I'm not contesting that good links may be helpful - but they NOT necessary.

Haha, this sounds very Charlie Murphy-esque.

Could you elaborate on why you say good links are not necessary? PPC?

Ask yourself, "What is the purpose of a link?"

If the purpose is to attract visitors, there are a great many OHTER ways to attract them besides links. Try SEO for good SERPs and actual advertising of your web site with the url included. Also, if you already have a sizable and loyal clientele, you may not need any more traffic.

If, OTOH, the purpose for your links is to increase your site's PR, then the link is far less likely to to bring potential customers. Surfers and SE bots, yes, but not converting visitors.

What's the purpose of YOUR links? Where do you put them?

If your links are driving targeted visitors then they are helpful.

All major crawlers would like to see other relevant sites link to yours. At the same time, all three discourage the use of link farms and irrelevant link exchange programs.

More links to your site will increase its credibility in Google's eyes and thus help in increasing site page rank and rankings on SERP.

If you follow Google news, you know that link building is a necessity part of SEO. Yes, you can purchase targeted traffic with PPC and other ads placed on relevant websites, but SEO link building is still a very important factor in bringing in new and interested traffic.
Most everyone today gets around the Internet via links and search, thus to maximize the traffic potential to your website, you have to incorporate everything into your broad marketing, including link building.

I think we need to expand our mind to see beyond just '1 link,' but to see how a link will affect the whole SEO system. The point is not if 1 link will bring in traffic, but how it will add to the whole SEO strategy which en mass, will bring your website higher rankings in the SERPS.

How many of you have actually read Google's Webmaster Guidelines? What about the parts thereof that address links and PageRank?

Yes, link building is important for any SEO campaign. In fact links like fuel for any website. running car without fuel is impossible as like in link building.

Link building is second thing in seo but your onside seo decide how you need to efforts. If your onside seo is great then you do not need to do link building on daily basis or in a high amounts.

Kevin's right. Things have changed and too many or the wrong kind of links can hurt you. You need abundant content that your visitors want to read and it has to be better than the next website, too. That is what's most important these days. In that case, a few links can help, but without it, you could be shooting yourself in the foot.
    Warm Regards,

    Denise

Quality back links are helpfull but only link building is not a good idea to get ranking or traffic. Posting unique and Quality content is the best way to get relevant traffic and ranking of your website.
