I do not understand why we need SEO at all? Is SEO job to correct web designers mistakes?
Why can't we build HTML sites technically right at first place like it was before 1997-1998.
What I see a role of SEO could be more business consultant role:
1. Keyword research using tools like WordTracker and Keyworddiscovery to find most efficent search phrases having higher KEI.
2. Consulting how to build proper HTML tags.
3. Developing a proper linking strategy, finding appropriate partners, etc.
4. Monitoring and analytics.
Just spending lot of efforts to be no 1 position in google having no idea who and how much are searching particular keywords is waste of money.

You basically answered your own question. It's like asking why do I need a lawyer or doctor? You can do a lot of the things they do, but can you do it as precisely, accurately, and efficiently as those with experience in the respective fields?

In my mind the best SEO is to focus on improving the quality your own website's contents as well as the technical aspects of your site.

If you just need a marketing company to tell you that you need to add some meta tags to your site, it is wasted money, because every webdesigner should know how important these are.

In fact, I consider a professional webdesigner MUST know about search engine marketing as well and a good SEO company must know how to develop websites. The one cannot go without the other.

Spend money (or your time) for adding more targeted contents to your website and the number of visitors will increase.

Also it is not just a matter of getting many visitors to your site... what is better, having 1.000 visitors a day and just one sale or 100 visitors and five sales ? Many SEOs are promising visitors, not sales. This is a big difference.

And while a SEO campaign can drive traffic to your site, it cannot guarantee that you finally make profit from this traffic - this depends upon the quality of your site.

In my judgment the better SEO is to focus on bettering the character your own website's subjects as well as the technical views of your site.
