You also need to learn about meta tags, title tags, submissions and URLs. Understanding the real value of blogs is also important. Blogs can also help in increasing your site’s visibility and traffic. SEO is not just about posting keywords in websites, putting it on rented contents and signing up for linking programs. You have to ensure that you optimize your website properly so your uses will be converted to customers. Your target traffic together with your optimized website will mean sales for you. You just have to take advantage of effective SEO techniques in order to guarantee results in every aspect of the online business.

In our experience, page optimization is on of the most effective SEO way to get trafic.
As to sitemap, I don't understand why is it so necessary if you have links on your site pages to other site pages (for robots) and usable top menu (for visitors).
Though we are thinking about sitemap.

Just because you can find your way around town does not devalue a good road/street map.

A sitemap is like that. It helps the SEs navigate your site in the simplest way possible.

A site map also helps when it comes to restructuring your website and rewriting its contents. This gives a more orderly arrangement to your website, thereby enabling the programmer to access each section specifically and make necessary alterations with ease.

I think today all webmasters and even people who order someone to make a site for them are well aware of the necessity of SEO and are concerned about it. I see this by the growing amount of vacancies for SEO-specialists.

Sitemaps are very important form the SEO point of view because these can help human as well as spiders to know more about the website. Generally we use three types of sitemap HTML, XML and Image sitemap.

    1. HTML - sitemap is used to enhance the user experience that user can browse the website very easily.
    2. XML - sitemap is used to instruct the search engine spider that how many pages you have in your website. We can submit this XML sitemap into the Google with the help of Google webmaster tool.
    3. Image Sitemap - This sitemap help us to get index our website very quickly into the search engines.

Sitemaps aren't nearly as important as they once were, and if you want your site to do well, you have to make sure the architecture and structure itself makes sense. For example, with or without a site map, you want to make sure that your site is divided up into recognizable pages - Category 1, 2, 3, etc. Then from there, subcategory a,b,c,etc.

Site maps make it easier to see all the pages at once, but they are used less and less by humans and search engines. I'd recommend spending more time arranging your site to make it easier for SEs to get to all your pages without trouble. A good site structure is key to SEO success.
