It's probably not the best idea to just go spamming the comments in blogs with random links, especially if they are unrelated to the blog it's self, and all you're doing is putting a link in there. You will get penalised. That's not to say blog commenting is a bad thing, i think you just need to be wary about how often you do it and where you do it, and don't just put a blind link down. Quality over quantity n all that!

Right, so...there's a lot of great information in this thread. But it just so happens that things have seriously changed, especially when it comes to some of the very specific issues being talked about here.

Matt Cutts is something of an SEO and search guru. He's very high-up at Google, and he's regarded as the guy in charge of regulating web spam.

Just the other day, he basically announced that guest blogging is dead. His post is titled "The decay and fall of guest blogging for SEO." It's from January 20th (10 days ago), and it's caused quite an uproar.

    http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/guest-blogging/

Now, it's important to remember one thing as you're reading this. I think that Cutts is talking about guest blogging in the same way that backlinking used to be done.

Guest blogging with quick, seat-of-the-pants post that clearly didn't have any energy, effort, expertise, or experience put into them.

I don't think this article applies to actual good content, or deals brokered between actual websites and/or blogs of repute that genuinely want to share excellent content with their audiences.

As a marketer or SEO professional, I still think that guest blogging can have its value...but only if you've got actual blogging capabilities in your toolbox. If you don't have something interesting to say or something legit to contribute to the blogging community, it's unlikely that a) you'll get any guest blogging deals on any sites that would help you out in a serious way, and b) that Google will care about the guest posts that you DO get put up.

The main takeaway? Focus on relevant, high-quality content. Google will like you, if you do. You will still be able to do guest posts, if you do. Google will like your guest posts, if you do.

    It's good for everyone!

I agree that you should try to get guest blog post on different blogs. It is good to leave comments, but it is better to get a guest blog post on a blog that has a lot of traffic. It can help your SEO. Our company, OSI Affiliate Software, provides affiliate software for companies and I tell our clients that once they have an affiliate program, they can approach a web site and let them know that you will write a guest blog post for them and you will give them an affiliate link and then let them know if a sale is made from that affiliate link, then you will give them a commission.

If you do leave comments on blogs, make sure you have read the article in detail and make sure you give your own perspective on the article and try to add some value to the readers.

This is true -- but based on what Mr. Cutts has to say, I think it's important to remember to do this strategically. (And I'd listen to him, as he's the head of Google's web spam team.)

Pick the blogs on which you guest post carefully. Foster legitimate relationships, as opposed to just looking for ways to blast the Internet with links that lead back to your site. Create content that's worth sharing, worth reading, and worth coming back to.

This is the vision Google has for the Internet. And whether we like it or not, in a lot of ways, their vision dictates the rules by which we have to play.

Just look at what happened a few months ago when they decided they wanted to encrypt all search keyword information.

I know that a lot of people in the online marketing community kicked up a pretty serious little dust storm when Cutts announced that guest blogging was "dead." I think, though, that a catchy headline was mistaken for a pretty big statement.

Guest blogging isn't dead just like backlinking isn't dead.

You might remember that a few years back, a big part of SEO strategies just involved blasting as many links onto the website as possible, regardless of what sites they lived on, etc. Google got wise to this pretty quickly, and changed search in a serious way -- and also penalizing the sites that were employing these practices (which are now considered black hat).

It's still smart to have a linking strategy, and backlinks are still an integral part of any site's SEO plans...but now Google has made sure that these links make the Internet a better place. Meaning that they are shared between sites that are RELEVANT to one another. Blasting a ton of backlinks everywhere won't help your site anymore, unless those links go on other sites that are of good repute, and are relevant to you and what it is you're doing.

I think that Cutts was trying to say the very same thing about guest blogging.

As a careless, spammy tactic for generating a ton of easy backlinks...guest blogging as dead.

But done properly (read: carefully), I do believe that guest blogging can still be a successful SEO strategy for those that are taking good advantage of content marketing.

Just Stick with the Organic Techniques

To get a backlink is not an easy task. And after the regular updates from Google's Penguin & Panda, it's almost a very tough task to make them. I am also an internet marketing specialist and want the backlinks for my websites. But this doesn't mean that I'll go with the unusual SEO techniques, NEVER. I always go with the relevant post, read it and then check what to be posted in the comments. I am not working for the backlinks as a whole but also for the visibility in an effective & organic way. That's it, and I also suggest other friends and bloggers not to go with the spamming stuff, just do the right things & techniques, and you will get "REWARDED".

This is 100% spot-on. Google is in the business of "rewarding" those who publish and post the content that is the most relevant, and is of the highest quality. No matter what. Quality is better and more important than quantity, now, and that's probably never going to change back.

Write blogs and have it published in good websites
Comment on relevant topics with a backlink
Extensive commenting using company account is not feasible, as you sound like spamers
Have social media and social bookmarking leverage the link building
