I have a small business, most of my employees require Internet access to do their jobs. I have some concerns about inappropriate use of the computers and how it might affect productivity. I know there is parental control software (such as SentryPC)for home computer monitoring but is there anything available for small businesses that will allow me to monitor my employees discreetly?

“Personal internet browsing” is any browsing that will not aid the employee in performing his/her job function for the Company. “Off’ hours are those outside of the normal working hours of all employees. Personal internet browsing is acceptable during non- company or “Off’ hours but it shall be used for personal development purposes. However, browsing sites which contain sexually explicit or other socially objectionable material while using company computers is strictly prohibited and also will tantamount to grave misconduct which would call for disciplinary /legal action.

These days even the smallest company needs to have computers in place, but it is important for business owners to keep careful track of what their workers are doing with those computers. Improper computer use obviously has an effect on productivity, but it can be a security risk as well. When employees use email for personal purposes they could inadvertently disclose company secrets, and that could put your business at risk. Going to unauthorized websites could also open up your computer network to viruses and other software attacks.

In addition or as an alternative to monitoring why not use a web content filtering program like OpenDNS. Then you can block sites such as Facebook, porn, gaming etc.

My sys admin installed Praetorian Guard. It has centralized administration and monitors all of our computers at work. It shows what applications and websites have been used and for how long. It will help you if you are afraid of employees breaching your security, for example. :)
I personally don't recommend spying on your workers or even disabling certain website from their access. Nobody enjoys being watched, I don't think. I would say hire people who you think are going to be great and trust them until otherwise required.
I've had the same concerns with my staff, so I've been using a free employee monitoring software with them, and I think it will be suitable for your needs as well. It takes and shows you screenshots of the employees' computer screens at regular, frequent intervals; it records the number of keystrokes and mouse clicks made by them, and also the times and duration of when they were idle and active. If you want to do the monitoring discreetly, I recommend you download the stealth version of the software which you have to install on the staff-computers yourself, preferably without the knowledge of your employees. You can use Imonitor. The effectiveness depends on size of your staff so keep that in mind. Plus even though you are in the right, many employees do not look kindly on being watched all the time.
