Back in the old days when I used to do Web marketing at a small ISP, we used some of the free submission tools that were available at the time. Let's just say -- you get what you pay for.

SubmitIt is still around and was the best tool we used -- out side of individual submissions to the major search engines and online directors. I think SubmitIt costs about $80 now. But it was one of the better submission tools.

If you prefer to manually enter your site into the top search engines, make a template of all your contact and site details to speed up the process. But if you wanted to be "quickly" included in the major search engines, go with a "paid inclusion" program that guarantees your site will be reviewed and/or included.

Let us know how your search engine marketing efforts turn out.

Here's a great article for those of you just starting to look at how to look at your website:

Small Business Web Analytics

One the most basic level, web analytics can be a valuable marketing tool. Others rely on web analytics to track site performance. Experts agree, though, that monitoring performance through web analytics software is only a first step.

Anybody else have any other recommendations?

I have recently used www.submitmacine.com which cost $149.50 American dollars. They submit my site for twelve months, the problem here is that my site relates to Australia which I specified and I am receiving thousands of crap emails and am listed with crap search engines. Luckily I submitted an email address just for the purpose of search engines. I guess the lesson here is to find out who they submit your site to and also ask them if you can be selective over who they submit too.

Good luck.

Hi Gary,

Submitting your site is like entering a race - it doesn't do any good unless you are ready. The question is, are you submitting a jaguar, a pack mule or a 2-legged turtle?

Is your site, or at least the home page, optimized for 2 or 3 carefully chosen targeted search phrases?

Was it optimized by some slick operator who may get quick results, but get the site banned later on? (a jaguar)

Is the optimization part of a plan to improve site visibility over time and go the distance? (a pack mule)

Do you have absolutely no idea what I am talking about and are you submitting a site with little or no focused text content? (a 2-legged turtle)

Many major search engines and directories do not permit automated submissions and require hand submission. Truth is, a well-trained pigeon could hand submit most sites. Go to the search engine or directory in question and read their requirements.

The tricky part is creating a site that will be listed in the first few pages of a reasonably popular search that ALSO captures and holds the attention of people who view the site.

Once you get someone to the site and catch their attention, you need to quickly provide the information they are seeking and convince them to take action in a way that benefits you.

Creating a site that is a genuinely useful sales and marketing tool for your business requires considerable skill and experience in Internet marketing which is radically different from print marketing.

If you are into do-it-yourself, find one of the search engine optimization forums (Ihelpyou is my favorite) or discussion lists that offer site critiques. Post your URL and a summary of your intentions and goals and heed the advice given.

Otherwise, find a SEM (search engine marketing specialist) you feel comfortable working with.

Otherwise, you will find your site is a money sink with no bottom and no returns.

Good luck to you.

There is a service which we have been using for years now and has yielded great results. It submits to all important and unimportant search engines, web directories and speciality directories (more than 5000 sites) and also to more than 3 million link pages, classified sites and message boards.

The basic service (up to 5 urls) is free (adware) while the subscription service includes up to 50 urls, and submits up to 12 sites at a time.

It is very important submit you website to all the major search engines. While there are numerous search engines on the Internet, getting listed on the top 5 search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL & Ask Jeeves) will generate the most traffic to your Web site. You can do this on your own and save a lot of many. Just make sure you follow the rules and regulations for each search engine. And be very wary of submission services that promise you everything under the sun since there are lots of scams out there.

It is also important to keep in mind that on-line advertising is now accepted as the best and most cost effective way to drive traffic to your site. Banner ads, we placed in appropriate Websites can prove to be instrumental in driving traffic.

Good luck with your new site.
