NAS setup questions

Anyone have any experience setting up NAS with an old PC? I read the following article,

but I was looking for more details. I want to take an old PC, setup it up for NAS, remove the keyboard, mouse and monitor and log into and manage the files from a browser on another computer within my network. Is this possible with homemade NAS?

Nice concept. I'm downloading FreeNas right now and I'll let you know how it sets up.
