ECommerce Guide recently published an in-depth series on using permission-based targeted e-mail as a marketing tool. The series, Targeted E-mail: From Spam to Choice Parts 1-6, can be found in the How Do I... archives here:

There are many ways to increase brand awareness:
First and foremost, submit you website to all the major search engines. While there are numerous search engines on the Internet, getting listed on the top 5 search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL & Ask Jeeves) will generate the most traffic to your Web site.
It is also important to keep in mind that on-line advertising is now accepted as the best and most cost effective way to drive traffic to your site. Banner ads, we placed in appropriate Websites can prove to be instrumental in driving traffic.
Good luck with your new site.

As most businesses root from the brick and mortar idea unlike pure online business -- I would advise to promote your company offline as much as you would do online. If you have the budget to splash, a good offline Ad/PR campaign would justify in the long run.
