Need Advice on ecommerce credit buying system

I wonder if anyone could advise me on how to go about setting up an e-commerce solution that will allow site members to buy credits for music downloads, basically the guy who's site it is wants it all to be done seamlessly on his site without breaking out to a third party supplier?

Is there such an API out there that would allow me to do this?

I will be scripting this in ASP & MS SQL though any advice would be appreciated.

Most of the gateways (LinkPoint, Payflow, Cybersource, Authorize.net, etc) available to United States merchants will offer a teststore for you to test integration with before even going live. LinkPoint TestStore (http://www.linkpoint.com/support/sup_teststore.asp) is one example. You should confer with your client to see if they are already accepting credit cards and might have a provider they can work with
