Questions about selling a domain name

I've owned a couple domain names since 1996. I used to run a rather popular Web site on it, but in the past two years I haven't updated it (it still gets around 1000-1200 unique visitors a day, even though it's old outdated content). I am interested in selling the domain names but have no clue where to start. I've visited a few Web sites who offer to 'appraise' your domain, but different ones ask for as high as $300 - and I don't even know if domain name appraisal really adds any type of value.

I've thought about listing it on eBay but I have no idea what price to ask, nor what you need to do to legally sell one.

If anyone has experience with selling domain names that could help me get started with information or reasonable services that you yourself have used and are pleased with, I'd greatly appreciate the advice.

I've seen them for sale on eBay, so it can't be illegal or they wouldn't allow it. I'm not sure how the transaction actually takes place though. I've never sold or bought one, just registered them.
